In the airy upper reaches of the Great Mechanism, the planar metropolis of Allegory whirls and gleams. The City of Puzzles pierces several mighty cogs near the dexter edges of Mechanus, where it gives way to the unfettered abstractions of the astral reaches. Though few mortals ever witness its articulated splendor, it is a popular point of contact and trade among planars.
Most of the city is protected by a field that impedes any attempts by non-natives to enter via planeshift, teleport, or similar effects. This impedence channels arrivals into public areas, where they are greeted by guides to assist them in their business in the city.
While its host plane is strongly law-aligned, the City of Puzzles varies by neighborhood from mildly law-aligned to mildly neutral-aligned. While portals here are rare, the mannekins who built the city have a penchant for travel that suggests they have their own means of planar transit.
Allegory is a lively, colorful city, boisterous by the standards of Mechanus. The streets and buildings have a penchant for re-arranging, but the locals seem to have no trouble finding their way. Various clockwork races make up the bulk of the population, but many other races can be seen. Visitors, unfortunately, are always escorted, and their access to the city is limited. Visitors who give their guides the slip quickly find the city turning against them in most unpleasant ways.
An oligarchy called the Major Arcana rules the city, and each Arcanum commands a company of mannekins and other servants who scurry across the city, administer to the Mechanism, and occasionally appear farther afield. Visitors who are particularly interested in the city may wish to inquire about employment opportunities. Successful dealings with the Major Arcana may ultimately lead to offers of citizenship, and entree into the secret life of the city.
