In ancient times these lands were home to Cavemen and primitive tribes of humanoids, with small settlements of civilized elves and halflings scattered here and there in the warm lands; some say these settlements were founded by refugees from Hy-Brazil. No native civilizations arose, for most of the land was cold and bleak, not unlike the great northern tundra of the Great Glacier; some say this strange condition was due to an ancient curse, or the death of a god of warmth and fire. It had ever been so, time out of mind, and much of the local flora and fauna had adapted, growing thick layers of fat and coats of fur and great sharp fangs and mighty tusks. Then, shortly before the rise of the Dragon Empire to the north, the area of cold climate shrank to less than half its size, to its current dimensions: south of the Frostridges near modern Old Hvolmor, north of Mammoth Rise near Kren, east of the Viceroy Mountains, and west of Cold Drake Forest. The warming lands were open for conquest by the Enneadim Empire, which conquered all the lands around the tundra, even up to the Viceroy Peaks (given their name for the lost city of the Enneadim Kings that can be found therein), and so gave the region its name, Ament, which simply means “west” in the Ghinorian tongue. For hundreds of years the Enneadim ruled; then came the Great Southern Migrations, with the Tlanitlans and Amazons boiling out of the south, armies of demons on their tail. Chaos reigned, and still reigns today, as the Ament lands are a patchwork of savage tribes and isolated towns. Ghinorians, Mgona, Tlanitlans, Amazons, Orichalans (descendents of refugees from the old Dragon Empire), and even far-ranging Valonar, among other less well-known races make the Ament lands their home. No single king has ruled the land since the collapse of the Enneadim Empire in the west, though the Tlanitlan Empire held many of the northern towns until its fall, and the Dragon Empire and Lenap both held colonies in the region at various times in their history. Untold treasures lay forgotten in lost cities and hidden vaults, while strange and mighty hairy beasts wander the cold plains of the Ament Tundra.
