Carpet of Flying

A carpet of flying is the most prominent flying magical item in the Wilderlands. The typical carpet is between 5 and 10 feet long on each axis, and can hold 200 pounds of weight per 5-foot-square section. The carpet flies as if affected by a permanent application of the overland flight spell. As per the spell, it moves at 40 ft. per round if unencumbered, and can hustle, allowing up to 64 miles of movement in an 8-hour day.

The carpet responds to verbal commands set during item creation. It responds to suitable commands issued by riders, or anyone who has successfully commanded it in the last day. Carpets are not typically intelligent, and can be easily confused by illusion magic and vocal mimicry. Carpets can respond to commands within earshot (up to 400 ft. in optimal conditions).

Riding a carpet of flying is generally terrifying to beginners. There are no straps, braces, or stirrups, and the fabric shifts and undulates as though sliding across a soft surface. Riders rarely stand on a carpet in motion, unless they are well-seasoned sailors. Riders typically grip the edge of the carpet and spread themselves prone, particularly if moving at maximum speed or in adverse weather.

Layering additional features or enchantments on a carpet of flying is certainly possible, but uncommon. Most “augmented” carpets are intelligent magic items. About 2% of these items have non-standard features (such as straps, cushions, rigid surface, unusual size or speed, invisibility), and even non-magical features can greatly increase the price of the item. Ordinary carpets of flying cost at least 20,000gp-60,000gp, depending on size.
