Plane of Extropy

This information is only privy to those with exceptionally high ratings in Knowledge (the planes). And even at that, it may not be particularly accurate. Caveat lector.

Most scholars who theorize about this realm see it as the ultimate “free lunch,” a cornucopia that is just as marvelously giving as the plane of Entropy is capriciously cruel. The font of creation, jubilant birth, resplendent power, lies surely just beyond our reach and comprehension.

How right and wrong they are.

There are parallels, beside the linguistic, between Entropy and Extropy. Both are coexistent with every other plane (with the possible exception of Axis Mundi, which has no documented access points to Extropy). Both are concrete places that could be visited, but few are equipped to survive the journey. They play vital roles in the function of the cosmos, as generator and destroyer. Beyond law and chaos, good and evil, they are birth and destruction made manifest.

But the planes’ similarities are quickly outstripped by their differences. Entropy is an (apparently) infinite plane, and Extropy seems to have no dimensions at all. As some proponent theorize, positive energy does indeed flow from Extropy into the cosmos at large, seeping across the planar membrane broadly rather than through portals. But negative energy also flows from the same font.

Extropy is the ultimate source of magic, essence, positive energy, and negative energy. It is the linchpin of most spells of the conjuration and necromancy schools. It is the birth of all things, but it is an almost-closed system. That which is born of Extropy almost never escapes it.

The gods all experience Extropy at least once in their careers, and know it as the Crucible. At the moment a being achieves Divine Rank 0 (see Divine Mechanics), it is briefly exposed to the raw engines of the cosmos – Extropy. In that instant, the chaff of the being is scoured away, transforming the individual into a unique expression of its inner essence. It emerges from the Crucible transformed, polished, divine.

Those who climb the ranks of divine power may strive to reach the refining fires of the Crucible yet again. After achieving sufficient power, the cosmic eye turns on them again, and Extropy tears through them. Those who survive the experience come to a sufficiently intimate understanding of the cosmos to claim a portfolio. When the Powers speak of claiming cosmic keys, they are paraphrasing and euphemizing their contact with the Crucible.

Entering the Crucible only guarantees transformation, not success. Those who attain contact with the extropic moment before they are ready suffer heavily for their hubris. They may be blasted to dust, hurl large swaths of territory into the falling-down-place, or find themselves transformed in body and mind beyond all recognition. Extropy is the point of infinite possibility. None are truly prepared for what it has to show, and all are irrevocably transformed by even the briefest glimpse.
