Feery's Leap
Stela 3 of 7
This is a rubbing from another slab of stone, roughly 12″×18″×4″. Like Stela 1 of 7, the rubbing reveals a dense passage of text that was incised deep onto the original stone. The tiny characters are in an odd dialect of Classic Orichalan, in a particularly boxy script that the party has seen in two ancient ruins. Because they do not have access to the original slab, the unintelligible text is likely to remain so. ### denote passages that are illegible, with multiple ### suggesting the length of the illegible passage.
The rubbing came from the Silver Serpent, as part of the surrender agreement that gave the Keep to the Windless Ring.
This ### is the third of seven, the testament of ### ### ### Shining-Echo, ### ### ### the keys of the Inward Gates, and former instructor of ### ### in the White Gardens.
We ### ### ### of the Sighing Plains. From the Sea Pallisades to the ### ### ### of the Whispering Spires to the stillness of the Unopened Gift, we ### ### greedily lapping up beads of lore from the weeping world-tree. So sure and headstrong we, to study gods rather than serve them, ### to strike us down. ### ### ### to set alight our own star beneath the Whispering Spires, how many of us thought ### lighting the wick of our own destruction, burning ### fate? By the blue light of our ### we issued a challenge to the gods: stop us if you can, while we build a ladder to your doorsteps.
In a stroke of bitter irony, our longest ally ### ### became our greatest foe, and the ### ### opens the gates of learning ### ### the gates of the heavens against our passage. By his ### summoned gods of war, of vengeance, of retribution, justice, ### ### even the ### ### of their oft-sung brethren. Half of ### raised their voices against us, and stirred their worshipers to make ### ###. Only a few voices in the heavens opposed these ### ### and they were silenced ### ###.
The Mother of the Seven Springs was stripped of her vestments and thrown to the earth even as the ### devoured her beloved city. The thrice-damned lich Queen of Frost came to our aid, but soon betrayed the Light of Discovery —though she paid as dearly as he when the ### and the Cry of a Thousand Tongues tore down their temples and slew their ###. The Eye of the Wine-Shadow Storm was a bold and brave bastion ### ### but her temples fell when the great calamity struck, and the seas rushed away from ###. The ### of the Opening Flower was the last to go out. Amazingly, she never flinched ### ###. I hear her song still, faintly, echoing across the dream-lines, mixed with the glaring light of our hubris. Could she ### ### have survived ### ###? I tried to follow the song, but lost it in ### the conduits. ### ### but I shall linger in that hope as long as I can.
I carve this stone by ###, and gird its essence to withstand the scouring sands of time. Let there be a ### ###, that when the sons of dragons and the sons of men again ### to greet the sky, they fall ### ###. I scribe this history both to exonerate my soul, and to provide tutelage to our hundreds-great-### who might read this record. Let each of these stelae find its way into wiser hands than ours.
